Ford Fiesta Production to Begin in Early 2010; European Hatchback Added for North America

MEXICO CITY, May 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — ford Motor Company today announced the new ford Fiesta small car for North America will be produced at the company’s transformed Cuautitlan Assembly Plant beginning in early 2010 and a sporty European hatchback model is being added to the North American lineup alongside the popular sedan.
Transformation of the facility near Mexico City begins this year, as the plant is converted from its current production of F-Series pickups for the Mexican market to small cars for all of North America. The Chihuahua Engine Plant, which builds I-4 engines, also will assemble diesel engines for light- and medium-duty trucks in a variety of global markets. In addition, through a joint venture with Getrag (GFT), ford will establish a new transmission plant in Guanajuato to support various ford products. Company officials announced the trio of investments jointly with Mexico President Felipe Calderon Hinojosa.
The new multi-plant development effort represents a $3 billion U.S. investment, including the support of local suppliers. It is Mexico’s largest ever automotive investment. The moves are expected to create approximately 4,500 ford jobs. Together with all direct and indirect employment at suppliers, the moves affect 30,000 jobs in Mexico.
“Ford is absolutely committed to leveraging our global assets to accelerate the shift to more fuel-efficient small cars and powertrain technologies that people really want and value,” said ford President and CEO Alan Mulally, who was in Mexico for the announcement. “Our investments in these facilities in Mexico are part of our plan to further realign our manufacturing capacity in line with the introduction of more small cars and crossovers.”
A small car concept called the Verve showcased the design direction for the new Fiesta when it debuted at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. Both sedan and hatchback models were displayed - with high praise from customers and the news media.
“Customers responded very positively after seeing both the sedan and hatchback versions of the Verve small car concept,” said Mark Fields, president of The Americas, ford Motor Company. “We know the market is headed toward more small cars and crossovers. With our product and manufacturing flexibility, we will be able to offer both models and add production capacity.”
The New ford Fiesta
When it goes on sale in North America in 2010, the new Fiesta will be bold and sophisticated - to help it clearly stand out from other small cars on the road. ford is building on decades of small car leadership in Europe as it develops the new Fiesta for North America to appeal to increasingly savvy customers who value technology, design and fuel efficiency.
Momentum in small-car sales is outpacing overall industry growth worldwide. Globally, small car sales have grown from 23 million units in 2002 to an estimated 38 million in 2012.
Driving the growth in the North American market is a group of young people aged 13 to 28 years - dubbed “Millennials.” Today, this group stands 1.7 billion strong worldwide and will represent 28 percent of the total U.S. population by 2010.
The Fiesta is the first of Ford’s new global family of small cars set to debut in Europe and Asia later this year and next year - and in North America early in 2010.
“We’re looking at every aspect of what’s defined ford as a small-car leader in Europe and working to build on this expertise in driving dynamics and design across a global family of ford cars that are as exciting to drive as they are to look at,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice president, Global Product Development. “The Fiesta is designed to set a new world standard for quality, design, fuel economy and comfort in the small car segment.”
Ford in Mexico
With this investment, ford - the first automaker to establish operations in Mexico - is building on a manufacturing presence of more than 80 years and an equally long tradition of supporting local communities.
“This opportunity to strengthen our business and the local industry has been made possible through support from the federal and state governments,” said Louise Goeser, president and CEO, ford of Mexico. “We look forward to working together to drive continued success in the future.”
Ford officials made the announcements in a joint event featuring President Calderon as well as Governors Enrique Pena Nieto, Jose Reyes Baeza and Juan Manuel Oliva Ramirez.
The total investment is expected to increase ford of Mexico’s annual production to nearly 500,000 vehicles and 330,000 engines by 2012, with nearly 80 percent of the vehicles and most of the engines slated for the North American market.
Today, Cuautitlan Assembly Plant makes trucks for the Mexican market, ranging from the ford F-150 to the F-550. To meet future demand, trucks for Mexico will be imported from the U.S., making room for a new generation of small cars that are stylish and fun to drive.
Ford also has stamping and assembly plants in Hermosillo, Sonora, where the ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln MKZ sedans are built. These mid-size cars are sold throughout North America as well as Venezuela and Brazil and have won numerous quality awards.
“Our workers at the Hermosillo plant have been a key part in boosting Ford’s overall quality,” Fields said. “Ford vehicles are among the best in the business in terms of initial quality, and we intend to keep raising the bar with each new product we bring to market, including Fiesta.”
Ford Motor Company, a global automotive industry leader based in Dearborn, Mich., manufactures or distributes automobiles in 200 markets across six continents. With about 244,000 employees and about 90 plants worldwide, the company’s core and affiliated automotive brands include Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Volvo, Mazda, and, until completion of their sale, Jaguar and Land Rover. The company provides financial services through ford Motor Credit Company. For more information regarding Ford’s products, please visit .

Key MA Legislative Committee Gives OK to Right to Repair Bill; Independent Auto Repair Shops Applaud Pro-Consumer Legislation

BOSTON, May 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Following extensive debate, a Massachusetts legislative committee has approved legislation (HB 296) that will provide independent repair shops the same access to diagnostic repair information and tools that car companies made available to their franchised dealers.
The Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure voted to report the landmark legislation out of committee favorably where it will next appear before the Committee on Ways and Means. car manufacturers have lobbied hard against the legislation that is co-sponsored by state Rep. Vincent A. Pedone, D-Worcester, and state Sen. Mark C. Montigny, D-New Bedford, arguing that independent shops already have access to the information they need. When independent repair shops met with their local legislators and debunked that claim, manufacturers then suggested that the independents wanted “trade secrets” or proprietary information.
“We have been clear from the beginning of this process that what we want - and what consumers want - is repair and diagnostic information that many of these manufacturers are selectively withholding,” said Stan Morin, who manages a repair business and serves as the lead advocate for passage of the legislation on behalf of the Massachusetts Alliance of Automotive Service Providers (AASP). “We don’t want or need their trade secrets or any information that could even vaguely be described as proprietary. If they are providing this repair information to dealers, then it isn’t the secret recipe for Coca-Cola and they can provide that information to us.”
“I can understand why manufacturers might want to protect proprietary information, but these cars belong to the owner of the car and that owner has the right to get it repaired wherever they choose. There are hundreds of business and thousands of employees at work in our independent service centers and they deserve to be protected every bit as much as these dealers,” said Pedone.
Joining the Massachusetts Alliance of Automotive Service Providers (AASP) in its longstanding support of the legislation (House Bill 296) is the New England Service Station & Automotive Repair Association, Inc. (NESSARA); the Massachusetts Auto Body Association (MABA); and the Central Mass. Auto Rebuilders’ Association.
“We want to make sure that our members, and the industry as a whole, retain the ability to locate the information needed to repair all vehicles. We fully support this legislation’s effort to keep the choice of where to have your vehicle repaired in the hands of the consumer,” said NESSARA Executive Director Paul F. O’Connell.
About Right to Repair:
The Right to Repair Act would require car companies to make the same service information and tools capabilities available to independent repair shops that they provide their to their franchised dealer networks. The legislation further provides car companies with strong protections for their trade secrets unless that information is provided to the franchised new car dealers. Amerigon Climate Control Seat(TM) (CCS(TM)) System Featured on Distinctive Models of Redesigned 2009 Ford F-150 Truck

NORTHVILLE, Mich., May 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Amerigon Incorporated , a leader in developing products based on advanced thermoelectric (TE) technologies for a wide range of global markets and applications, announced today that its proprietary Climate Control Seat(TM) (CCS(TM)) system will be offered on three of the distinctive, high-end models of the 2009 ford F-150 truck, including the new Lariat Platinum, the Lariat and the King Ranch models. CCS will be a standard feature on the F-150’s Lariat Platinum and King Ranch models and offered as an option on the Lariat.
The ford F-150, traditionally America’s best-selling and most popular vehicle, has redesigned the 2009 models inside and out, particularly the higher-end models that include CCS. The Lariat Platinum is completely new and designed to be the most luxurious F-150 ever built. It features a satin chrome grille and standard 20-inch, 16-inch spoke polished aluminum wheels and, inside, the CCS system is built into the 10-way captain’s chairs upholstered with top-quality leather, tuxedo stitching and embroidered logos on the seatbacks.
The King Ranch, named after a sprawling Texas ranch, and Lariat models feature a list of upgrades including a Western motif and saddle-grade leather seats in some models. While the CCS system is offered as a standard feature on the King Ranch, CCS is being offered with an extensive option package in the 2009 Lariat model.
“Being a part of the ford F-150 truck line is a significant milestone for Amerigon,” said Amerigon President and Chief Executive Officer Daniel R. Coker. “As America’s best selling vehicle, the F-150 may be the best known brand in the world when it comes to trucks. It is certainly one of the most respected truck lines ever produced. Furthermore, to have CCS be a standard feature on the Lariat Platinum, designed to be Ford’s most luxurious truck, and King Ranch models and a featured option on the Lariat model, speaks to the respect our seat system has earned in the automotive industry. We are without question very proud to be a part of the new designs for Ford’s best, most distinctive trucks.”
About CCS
The CCS system, which is built around Amerigon’s highly-efficient, solid-state thermoelectric device, is completely independent of the automobile’s heating and air conditioning system and does not reduce power available to the engine. It also emits no CFCs or other gases and is completely friendly to the environment.
Air is forced through the heat pump in the CCS system and thermally conditioned in response to electronic switch input from the seat occupant. The conditioned air circulates by a specially designed fan through ducts in the seat cushion and seat back, so that the surface can be heated or cooled. Each seat has individual electronic controls to adjust the level of heating or cooling. CCS substantially improves comfort compared with conventional air conditioners by focusing the cooling directly on the passenger through the seat, rather than waiting until ambient air cools the seat surface behind the passenger.
Amerigon is the largest supplier of TE systems for cars, with more than 3.8 million thermoelectric-based seat systems sold.
About Amerigon
Amerigon develops products based on its advanced, proprietary, efficient thermoelectric (TE) technologies for a wide range of global markets and heating and cooling applications. The Company’s current principal product is its proprietary Climate Control Seat(TM) (CCS(TM)) system, a solid-state, TE-based system that permits drivers and passengers of vehicles to individually and actively control the heating and cooling of their respective seats to ensure maximum year-round comfort. CCS, which is the only system of its type on the market today, uses no CFCs or other environmentally sensitive coolants. Amerigon maintains sales and technical support centers in Southern California, Detroit, Japan, Germany and England.
Certain matters discussed in this release are forward-looking statements that involve risks and uncertainties, and actual results may be different. Important factors that could cause the Company’s actual results to differ materially from its expectations in this release are risks that sales may not significantly increase, additional financing, if necessary, may not be available, new competitors may arise and adverse conditions in the automotive industry may negatively affect its results. The liquidity and trading price of its common stock may be negatively affected by these and other factors. Please also refer to Amerigon’s Securities and Exchange Commission filings and reports, including, but not limited to, its Form 10-Q for the period ended March 31, 2008 and its Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2007.

Ride Safely Together in the Car This Summer

IRVINE, Calif., May 28 /PRNewswire/ — ‘Tis the season for families to pack up their cars and hit the road on trips both short and long. volvo Cars of North America, a leader in safety innovation, is offering parents tips to pass along to their most precious cargo: their kids. While often overlooked in the safe driving world, kids can present parents with dangerous distractions while driving. Simple, preventative measures can keep both young passengers and adult drivers out of harm’s way.
“A distracted driver is far more likely to end up in or cause an accident,” said Bruno DiGennaro, volvo senior safety expert. “Oftentimes driver distractions come from young, backseat passengers. Talk with your kids about safe riding practices before hitting the roads this summer. You’ll help keep everyone on your road trip out of harm’s way.”
In addition to putting small children and infants in car seats properly, there are other things parents can do to keep children safe in the car. volvo offers these tips for riding safely:
— Limit the noisemakers. Parents are more and more turning to “road trip
babysitters” such as Game Boys, portable DVD players and iPods to keep
their kids happy and busy on long trips and when traffic gets bad.
Practice moderation with this in your car. Set rules around wearing
head phones or only having one thing playing at a time. The beeps and
tones that these machines make can be block out the sounds of a beeping
horn or even an oncoming emergency vehicle’s siren.

— Pack low. See more. When the trunk or hatch gets full with bags and
coolers, kids tend to squeeze stuff on to the back shelf of the car or
pile their hatch area right up to the ceiling of the car. This can take
away some key sight lines. At every stop, take an inventory of what has
crept into these sight lines and take 30 seconds to repack your stuff
before you get back on the road.

— Stick together. Sometimes on road trips, it can be as dangerous out of
the car as it is in the car. Rest stops, restaurants and gas stations
that your family has never been to before pose risks such as not
knowing when and where to look for oncoming cars. Unfortunately, public
places on the open road can also be hangouts for people preying on
young kids. Never send a child under 18 to a restroom by him or
herself. Form teams of at least two to head inside. As alert as you are
on the road, be equally as alert when you make stops.

— Avoid rival sibling arguments. Let’s face it, kids that have to sit in
cars for a longer time than they are used to alongside their brother or
sister may pick a fight with their sibling. These family moments can be
dangerous to parents behind the wheel because their instincts tell them
to break up the fight just as they would if they were in their living
room. Stern warnings to riders about fighting in the car need to be
made crystal clear before you put the car in drive. If things get
really out of hand, pull over and deal with the situation on the side
of the road or at a gas station.

— Keep the car seat safe for your youngest passengers. The best car seat
is the one that fits your child properly, is easy to use and fits in
your vehicle correctly. Install the car seat in the vehicle’s backseat.
Infants under 20 pounds or younger than one year old, should ride in a
rear facing car seat. Check to see that the safety belt holds the seat
tightly in place and make sure the harness is buckled snugly around
your child. Some new cars, including Volvo’s, now offer integrated car
seats. Visit
to learn more about child safety in cars. At you
can find ease of use ratings for child seats on the market today.

— Never leave your child alone in car. Young children can overheat
quickly in a warm car. Older children can loosen their seat belt, climb
into the driver’s seat, figure out how to undo the parking brake and
potentially cause an accident.

— Keep small toys in check. Children may get upset and throw their small
toys at you, potentially causing you to lose control of the car and
cause an accident.

— Engage kids in ride safe ideas. Kids have great ideas and they are more
likely to own them if they come up with them. Ask each kid rider to
come up with their idea to keep their family safe on their road trip.

All ford authorized dealers are trained in implementing “Ford Service,” which is intended to improve customer relationships and a set of customer care experiences included as part of Changan Ford’s free Roadside Assistance program.
Ford also requires dealerships to undergo certification for ford QualityCare, a program established in 1987 to enhance customer satisfaction. The QualityCare program covers all details of customer service to standardize and improve quality and efficiency. As of today, 117 of China’s full-service dealerships have obtained QualityCare certification.
